USING SYMANTEC'S pcANYWHERE WITH PRISTINE

Several Pristine RapidFire and MMCS users have asked questions about using Symantec's pcAnywhere remote control software with their automation systems. Our technical staff has tested Pristine RapidFire and MMCS with pcAnywhere for DOS Version 5.0 and has prepared the following notes for your information:

  1. Use the Standard Installation process when installing pcAnywhere. When asked for the name of the modem installed, use "Generic #1" if the modem used is not listed in the program. Start at 19200 baud rate until communication connections are tested, then go up in baud rate.

  2. Avoid COM Port Packing, a term used by Symantec's Tech Rep. Do not skip COM Ports in setup. Since it is imperative to NOT have any interrupt conflicts, the best course of action is to disable COM 2 in the computer's CMOS and setup the modem for COM 2 IRQ 3.

  3. Use a Microsoft Mouse Drive on the Host Computer, the MSCMOUSE.COM does not work properly on both the Host and Remote at the same time. We used Microsoft's MOUSE.EXE Version 9.0 in our testing and it worked satisfactorily.

  4. Load the MOUSE.EXE in the AUTOEXEC.BAT before AW.EXE is loaded. This is imperative. The system will not work properly if the mouse driver is loaded after pcAnywhere is loaded.

  5. Pristine RapidFire or MMCS will be interrupted twice when the Remote joins the Host and once when the session is ended. This cannot be avoided according to Symantec since pcAnywhere for DOS is not multitasking. When the connection is made, RapidFire will be interrupted when the modem answers and a second time when pcAnyhwere is becoming operational. The automation system is interrupted at the end of the session when the modem is reinitialized for the next session. It is our recommendation that Pristine be off line during the connection and termination of each session, if possible. The interruptions will result in dropping of audio and occasionally in skipping to the next event due to status checking by Pristine.

  6. Screen refreshes are slow, but do not interrupt audio.

  7. Symantec's Tech Rep said they have no record of any problems with any specific mouse driver. He did suggest trying the Microsoft driver on the Host, if the Mouse Systems' MSCMOUSE.COM did not work, which it did not in our tests. It does not matter which mouse driver is used on the Remote computer, both the Microsoft and Mouse Systems drivers work equally as well on the Remote Computer.
